Make Sure You Are Always Taking Notes

Make Sure You Are Always Taking Notes

When you encounter an important piece of information, are you ready to capture it?

Do you rely on your memory? Or do you have to scramble for a pen and random piece of paper?

Whenever you encounter important information, make sure you take note or else you will find yourself searching for the same facts later.

Always Be Ready to Take Notes

You never know when you are going to run into an important detail that you will need again later. Instead of doing the pen and Post-It note scramble, you should always be ready to take notes.

In fact, you should even know where you are going to capture that piece of info… because you always capture your notes to the same place. (Right?)

Taking notes should not be a chore. Rather, it is a time-saving habit that results in better productivity and less wasted time.

When was the last time you had to look up the same piece of information… more than once? Or even have to call someone back and ask the same question again.

“Always be ready to take notes.”

If there is any doubt you will need something again, always take notes.

Here are a few tips to help with your Note-taking:

  • Paper or Electronic – It doesn’t matter what type of note-taking tool you use, as long as you use it consistently. Some people swear by the power of pen and paper. I prefer electronic notes, because they sync with all my devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac, and laptop), and because they are instantly searchable.
  • Have Your Notes with You at All Times – It may sound extreme, but your notebook should be with you always. If it’s not, that’s when you end up using a napkin, or Post-It note, or whatever.
  • One Place to Look – Keep all your notes in one place. This way you only have one place to look when you need to recall something. I keep all of mine in Apple Notes. They are always at my fingertips on any of my devices.
  • Saves Time Later – It may seem like taking notes takes extra time in the moment, but it results in tremendous time savings down the road. You’d be amazed how many more details you retain just from documenting, and you always have your notes to refer to when needed. This prevents having to seek out the same information, and even solve the same problems again.

Capture That Note!

You should always be on the lookout for important information.

Whether it is a phone number, important fact, or solution to a problem, save it in your notes for later.

Always be taking notes, and you’ll have them when you need them.

  1. Hi Craig,

This post just reminded me that I should start writing notes again. I remember that Richard Branson writes everything down and he says it helps him a lot.

One thing I’m wondering is what’s your system for writing down notes while having a meeting or 1-to-1 conversation? It seems impolite for me to not focus on the conversation.

    Cheers,
    Val

  2. i always take notes… my problem that i dont really have a system so they are in one place but in a huge mess 🙁

  3. My note compiler of choice right now is the Eccolo World Traveler journal… Not ideal and available 100% of time, but not bad. Used to carry a mini journal in shirt pocket. Need to put that back in place for things that pop up when the journal is not available.

  4. For a good 2 decades, I went on with my life & never bothered to take notes. It was’t until Evernote came along that note taking is now fun. But I get the idea. The trouble with all this information onslaught is that it’s bewildering to expect ourselves to keep tracking of anything we read 10 mins ago, forget for the time “when we need it the most” 🙂
