Take A Different Perspective

Lemon & Lime

Sometimes a little forced change of perspective can let you see things in ways you don’t normally.

Last night I got to experience a cool thing.  It was called “flavor tripping.”

Now, before your mind starts wandering to illicit activities… let me tell you that it was a food tasting experience.

You eat a small berry, (actually called a miracle berry).   It confuses your tastes buds for about an hour.  Everything that normally tastes sour or bitter, now tastes sweet.

It has some profound effects…

  • Lemons and limes taste good.  You can eat them straight up.
  • Grapefruit is not bitter.  I ate one like you would an orange.
  • Goat cheese and strawberries taste like cheesecake!  Unbelievable.
  • And finally, Guinness beer with lemon sorbet in it, tastes like a root beer float!

These rather extreme tastings made me think, what if you took a look at your normal activities through a different perspective?

Look Different Today

Try looking at things a little differently today.

Question things that you don’t normally question.

Examine things that you normally take for granted.

Here are a few things to ask yourself:

  • Is your “busy work,” getting done what you need to get done?
  • Are you doing what really matters to your customers?
  • Is email your work, or something that is preventing you from doing your work?
  • Is your time management saving time?  Or is it so complex that it is a burden?
  • Are you moving closer to your goals?  Or running in place?
  • Is your current path taking you where you want to go?

What others questions can you think of from your work and personal life?

You may not discover any amazing truths or miracle solutions, but you might just find yourself pondering the basis of your habits and common actions.

Forcing a Different Perspective

We could all use a little “flavor tripping” in our business and personal lives once in a while.

It would force us to look at things a little differently.  And that might be good.

Questioning your perspective from time to time can be a good thing.  It allows you to see beyond your normal habits and ruts.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a “miracle berry” that will let you instantly see things differently.  You have to do that yourself.

What could you consider from an alternate perspective?  What deserves questioning in your normal activities?

  1. What a fun perspective! I like it! And actually experienced something similar this morning with a client (in a good way). Maybe it’s just delirium from my flu shot. 😉

  2. Love the Article as well as “The Dritwood Principle”. The Question of – If you do nothing differently, where will you be next year and the Answer of: The same place you are today” really hits home. I have started a new fitness and health regime today and this was a very timely article, not only for workplace but for personal lifestyle.
