Why You Should Fix Things Before They Break

“If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.”

We have all heard this advice. And on the surface, it appears to be a good piece of guidance. Yet, taking this cliché as a rule can be counter-productive, even dangerous.

Today, I want to tell you why you should fix things in your life before they break.

If It Isn’t Broke, You Should Still Fix It

“It it isn’t broke… don’t fix it.”

What this statement is really about is not being wasteful, and spending effort fixing things that are already working. (For example, you don’t need to buy a new car if your current one already meets your needs.)

However, this advice as a life rule can actually cause you more problems and life friction. Many people use it as a blanket excuse not to keep up with maintenance activities whether it is related to their belongings, their job, or even their health.

You need to maintain things so that they don’t break or cause issues. In fact, you need to fix them before they reach the breaking point.

“Fix things before they wear out.”

Change the oil in your car.
Update the software on your computer.
Backup your phone.
Workout to keep in shape.
Get your annual physical.
Plan your goals.
Have a budget.
Clean your house.

All of these are maintenance tasks that will prevent problems, and thus more work, in the future.

What you want to do is maintain things so that they don’t become broken. In the military, this is called “preventative maintenance.”

What does this have to do with being more productive? Everything.

After all, time management is all about making better use of your time. Would you rather spend your time doing the important things in your life and pursuing your goals? Or would you rather spend it “cleaning up problems that were the result of not keeping up with maintaining your life and possessions?

Prevent Problems Before They Happen

If it isn’t broke… you still need to maintain it. This applies to almost all areas of life. From work, to play, to your home, and even relationships.

‘Life maintenance prevents life friction.’
