10 Reasons You Should Go to Bed Early and Get Up Early

Are you an early bird? Rising before everyone else. Getting a head start before the day begins.

Or are you an night owl? Staying up into the darkness. Working long after everyone else has given in for the day.

I use the early morning hours for writing, planning, and working out. These are my top tasks of the day. And the ones that usually get pushed aside by the hustle and bustle of the day.

By going to bed early and getting up early, you can make sure that put your priorities first.

Early to Bed, Earlier to Rise

I am a big believer in going to bed early and getting up early.

Staying up late usually don’t produce the same results for me as an early start.

Getting up early gives you a head start on most of the world. You get to begin your day while everyone else is still asleep. As well, you can get your most important tasks done before the business of the day overtakes your priorities.

There are many other benefits to getting up early, as it is usually the best time to work uninterrupted by the rest of the world.

Here are 10 Reasons You Should Go to Bed Early and Get Up Early:

  1. The Early Bird Gets the Worm – This is one of the best time management truisms ever. Those who get up early, get a head start before everyone else. I get more done in the early morning hours than many people get done all day.
  2. Your Body Needs Enough Rest – Your body needs enough sleep. Without it, you can’t function to your full potential. Was the extra two hours you stayed up worth the result that you were too tired to go to the gym or stay awake at your job?
  3. Nothing Good Happens After Midnight – I have seen variations of this advice. Some say, after 2AM. But sorry, but it’s midnight. You don’t need to be out on the town after midnight.
  4. You Have Kids – Many parents find that they flip their sleep schedule once they have kids. Instead of staying up late, they get up early. This works for so many reasons. Sleep when the kids are sleeping. And as well, get up before they do and get your most important tasks done.
  5. Say No to TV (or Netflix) – We live in a world where there is more entertainment than anyone can watch in a lifetime. No one became successful by staying up binge watching the latest trendy show on Netflix or TV.
  6. Internet Surfing Isn’t a Sport – As well, you shouldn’t surf the Internet all night. Many people get in bed a reasonable time, and then surf on their phone for hours before actually going to bed. Then they wonder the next day why they are so tired and ineffective in their work.
  7. You Will Burn Out – There is a difference between not getting enough sleep for a night, and doing it repeatedly over a long period. You will burn out eventually. Those who don’t get enough sleep regularly end up with bigger problems, such as being out of shape, etc.
  8. It’s Quiet in the Morning – It can be hard to find large amounts of quiet time to do creative work or even just thinking. The early hours of the morning from 4-7AM are some of the best times to get that concentration work done.
  9. Puts You at the Top of Everyone’s List – When you work in the AM, you put yourself at the top of everyone’s inbox. While I don’t recommend doing email before you do your most important work. Sending emails or voicemails before the rest of the working world is up, puts you at the top of people’s inboxes. As most people work their inbox from newest to oldest messages, you will be at the top of their list when the day begins.
  10. Builds Motivation and Momentum – Getting a head start on everyone else, just feels great. When you finally get to the office, you have already accomplished much of your day’s priorities. While others are arriving late, searching for coffee, and socializing… you can be proud that you have already worked out, planned your day, and completed some of your most important tasks.

Early to Bed, Early to Rise

There may be a few night owls out there. But, they are a rare bird in my book. Most of the people who stay up late are wasting their hours and losing rest.

Go to bed early, so that you can get up early.

Get up early, and do your most important work before the world is awake.

That is an early bird’s recipe for success.

  1. Nice article. But remember what works for you does not work for everyone else.. and there is no research to support that early risers get more out of life in any way, shape, or form. I am a big believer in NOT working out and eating pizza and pasta.. that’s because I happen to be 110 pounds with an extremely high metabolic rate. Clearly not advocating that for everyone.
Ps: the quiet early hours you mention.. I am awake too.. wrapping up while you ae about to begin.. good luck with the worms.. I think I ate them all. 🙂 🙂

  2. I want to get up earlier on a regular basis, so I can continue to write on my first book on tea. It is also time for planning, goal setting, new projects, etc. My challenge is to go to bed earlier. I am a night watchman… 😉

  3. I go to bed at midnight most nights because I am out of school but I always end up getting up around 6 or 7 and I am so tired that I can’t even bring myself to stand up so I just toss around until 8 or 9!

  6. I made a vid on how to get from ‘inside head’ to piano-roll. Its best when the BPM is relatively low, but give it a try, and see if it works for you:

  9. I need to rise prior all the time, so I can keep on composing on my first book on tea. It is additionally a time for arranging, objective setting, new activities, and so forth. My test is to hit the hay before. I am a night guard… ?
