There is a term in computer science called “GIGO.”
It stands for “Garbage In = Garbage Out.”
At its simplest level, it means that you get out what you put in.
I have an alternate phrase that I use for those who are not reaching their goals:
Nothing In = Nothing Out.
Today, I want to ask you, “What are you putting in?”
Is Your Effort Enough?
I was chatting with a friend the other day who was frustrated with his ability to get in shape.
He said, “I don’t get it, I go to the gym 4-5 times a week.”
Yes, but are you pushing yourself? Or are you just give a half-hearted effort?
If you want the results, you have to do the hard work.
If you put nothing in, you are going to get nothing out.
When people say they aren’t seeing the results they want, I challenge them as to their level of effort.
Showing up at the gym isn’t enough.
Going through the motions isn’t going to break a sweat.
You have to push yourself. Hard. Harder than you have before.
That is how results are done.
Exert Yourself… Repeat.
If you are dissatisfied with your results, ask yourself if you are putting in the effort.
To get in shape. Or to get promoted in your job. Or to have more meaningful relationships.
It is not about showing up. (Although that helps.)
It is about exerting yourself. And doing the hard work.
Here are several ways that you may be shorting your effort:
- Not Enough Effort – Going to the gym and lifting weights that are half what you should be, won’t produce results. If you aren’t exerting yourself, you’re not going to improve.
- Not the Right Effort – Doing the wrong actions won’t get your results. Don’t confuse movement with progress. Bad habits and behavior will only take you in the wrong direction.
- Not Disciplined Effort – Progress is made by streaks. You are what you do every day. Slacking off at the first sign of resistance doesn’t get the goal done.
- Not Practiced effort – You get better at everything you do. You first attempts will be the hardest. Your skill and strength will grow as you advance.
- Not Repeated Effort – Doing it once, doesn’t get it done. You have to do it again… and again. That is how winning is done.
Put In The Effort
Examine your level of effort.
Are you pushing yourself or giving the minimum required?
You get what you give.
Ask yourself, “What am I going to put in today?”
Question: Where do you need to put in the hard work?
Craig,
I couldn’t agree more. Very well written by the way. Asking yourself these questions about the kind of effort you are really putting in has a way of weeding out the excuses. I love it! The gym example hits the nail on the head every time. I have been disciplined with staying in shape for the past 10 years and everyone always asks me what the secret is. I always tell them the same thing. “Do The Work”!.
Thx, Joseph.
And love your answer, “Do the work!” 🙂
Hi Craig,
I came across your blog while looking for blogs to make a guest posts. I am delighted to that I found you.
Anyway love this post. What you said about don’t confuse movement with progress. I experience this first hand a couple of years ago, I was working so hard with nothing to show. I did my 90 day plans very diligently but it took me few months to stop & think why isn’t this working?
Learned my lesson hard way.
Now to answer your question – I need to put hard work doing more guest posts.

Damayanthi, best wishes!
