Do What 99% of People Will Never Do

Do you strive to be like everyone else?

Do you try to do what everyone else is doing?

Let me ask, “How is that working for you?

Here’s a story why being like everyone else isn’t such a great idea.

A Story of Extraordinary

Yesterday, I met someone extraordinary. She works at the local cafe which I frequent.

During one of my visits a while ago, she mentioned that she wanted to write a book. She also said she had a friend that was going to be her publisher.

I was intrigued but not overly optimistic. I know many people who “want to write a book.” (A friend of mine has been saying he is going to write his book for almost 10 years.)

However, each time I would stop by the cafe, I would inquire about her progress. And each time she would respond in a positive manner that she was still going to do it.

Yesterday, however, the answer was different.

I asked her how the book was coming.

She had a big grin on her face and from behind the counter she pulled out a bound copy of her book!

Wow. A real book! I congratulated her!

It was done. She finished it. And she published it.

She did what 99% of those who say they will write a book will never do: She wrote it.

And then she did what 99% of those who write a book will never do: She published it.

She had done what most people would never do… she finished one of her dreams.

Doing What Others Do Not

I don’t know if her book will be successful. Yet, that really doesn’t matter.

What is important is that she accomplished what many others have not. She finished and published her book.

And that makes her a winner no matter what happens with her book.

How did she write her book when tens of thousands of want-to-be authors never get past “page one?”

She persevered. She didn’t quit. And she kept going.

She did what others did not.

What Does It Take To Do What Others Do Not?

  • Not listening to those who say you can’t
  • Not giving up no matter what the odds
  • Not stopping before the finish line
  • Not following the common path, but instead blazing your own way
  • Doing what is right instead of what is easy
  • Not surrendering your dreams at the first setback
  • Going through brick walls when needed
  • Not letting obstacles block your way
  • Paying the price for your dreams
  • Willing to sacrifice when necessary
  • Having the discipline to stay the course… long after others have quit.

Less Than One Percent

If you do what everyone else does, then you will be like everyone else.

And that means average. Ordinary even.

Instead, go for above average. Extraordinary.

Don’t be part of the 99%.

Be part of the 1%… (much less actually) … who actually do.

Question: What are you going to do to be part of the 1% who accomplish their goals?

  1. Thanks for your post, couldn’t come at a better time… I am going to finish my website project regardless of the 99% 🙂

  2. Craig,

What great motivation to keep going. I’ve often thought that a good indicator when it comes to success is to simply survey what everyone else is doing and if you are doing something different, then chances are you are on the right path. This takes plenty of courage, discipline, and motivation. It’s worth it to be in the top 1 percent!

  3. I have recently decided to align myself with a creative group that produces videos, skit nights, etc. as a Christian ministry. I am writing a skit and I carry my netbook around with me wherever I go to get it finished.

  4. What an inspiring post! Great job. And I love that you included specific things we need to do to keep forging ahead. I will share this.
