10 Reasons You’re Not Winning

You’re not reaching your goals.

You’re coming up short.

You think you are giving it you all, yet you’re still not making it.

Do you ever ask, “Why am I not winning, today?”

Not Winning

We all find ourselves losing sometimes.

In fact, you if aren’t failing once in a while, you probably aren’t trying enough.

Yet, we want to win.

And sometimes we get frustrated when we don’t.

We question ourselves. We question our abilities.

What do I need to do to win?

Winners do what others do not.

They are the ones trying long after everyone else has quit.

Winners win even when others say it’s not possible.

What do you need to do to win?

Why You Aren’t Winning

Winners tend to keep winning.

And losers seem to keep losing despite themselves.

What separates these two groups?

Is it simply skill? Superior ability?

This is not always the case.

In fact, winning often comes down to attitude and discipline more than raw talent.

Here are 10 Reasons You’re Not Winning:

  1. You Don’t Believe in YourselfConfidence leads to winning. If you don’t have faith in yourself, then you probably won’t be successful. As Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right.”
  2. You Don’t Know the Rules – It’s hard to win if you don’t know the rules of the game. This is a mistake that many newcomers make. They think can win before they learn the requirements of what they are trying to accomplish. This leads to mistakes that could have been avoided with a little more knowledge.
  3. You Worry About the Odds – If you spend all of your time worrying about failing, it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. (See #1). Winners don’t let the odds stop them from achieving their dreams.
  4. You’re Trying But Not Doing – Don’t try to do something… do it! As Yoda said, “Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.”  Don’t try to fit exercise into your schedule… do it. Don’t try to be on time… do it!
  5. You Haven’t Started – You can’t finish what you don’t start. Too many people lose by default. In other words, they lose because they never actually play. You’re an unsuccessful author if you never write a book.
  6. You’re Holding Back – You’re not giving it your all. You’re either afraid of what people will say or think. You won’t win if you’re not giving 100% effort.
  7. You Are Listening to the Naysayers – Many people will tell you that you can’t win. They’re not winning and they don’t want you to either. Never listen to the critics in the stands. Steve Jobs didn’t listen when the mobile phone industry laughed when Apple released a phone. The best way to silence the critics is to win.
  8. You Are Trying for Perfection – Don’t let the pursuit of perfection prevent you from winning. You have to know when good is good enough and let perfection go. This past weekend, I sent a TMN newsletter that contained a typo to several thousand people. But, I sent a newsletter. Most people didn’t.
  9. You’re Not Leaving Your Comfort Zone – Winning often requires you to do things that you have not done before. If you want to win, a required skill is to be able to be uncomfortable.
  10. You’re Not Willing to Pay the Price – Everything in life has a price. It may be time, money, or practice. Whatever it is… you have to be willing to pay. There is no shortcut. And no one is going to give it to you.

Playing to Win

Are you give it your all? Are you playing to win?

Or are you letting yourself or others stop you?

Don’t tell me that I can’t do it.

Don’t tell me that I won’t win.

And of course, “Never tell me the odds…”

  1. Great article, to answer your question: fear of success prevents me from succeeding or winning.

My fear is that I’ll pour hundreds of hours of my life and sacrifice to accomplish something – finish a well crafted e-book; create a blog worth reading; et cetera – and succeed, only to fail to even maintain the level of success I’ve accomplished. By succeeding I’ll create an expectation I can’t live up to. (Perhaps the root of this fear is #1)

    1. Derek, thanks for sharing.

I hear your thoughts on not being able to maintain success… but, you won’t know until you get there. 🙂

And if you don’t do it… you’ll never know.

      Go for it!

  2. So love this article and I always quote Yoda – “there is no try, there is do or do not”, so love that you included it here. I’d say self belief is one of the biggest things. I’m right in the middle of a huge initiative right now that could be a huge success or fail massively and my biggest focus is to concentrate on why it will succeed and to believe in what I’m doing despite the odds. That can hard to do but oh so worth it, just like the Olympic athletes competing in London – despite all the odds they need to believe in themselves and their abilities to succeed.
