Have you ever had your computer fail? Or the hard drive crash?
What did you lose? Important files? Personal documents, pictures, and memories that cannot be replaced?
Some close friends of mine just had their home computer crash. They lost everything.
- All their digital pictures
- All their personal files
- All the financial documents they had scanned
I gently asked if they had any of it backed up. They did not.
Much of what was lost was irreplaceable including all of the pictures of their kids since they were born.
So, today’s question is… if this were to happen to you, what’s your backup plan?
What is Your Backup Plan?
When was the last time you backup up your important files? Your pictures, documents, music, and more.
Last week? Last month? Last year?
Mine were backed up last night at midnight. And the night before that. And the night before that.
In fact, my files are backed up every night using Mozy’s Home Backup service. (affiliate link)
It costs less than $5 a month. That is a great price for the peace of mind and safety it provides.
Even if you are backing up to hard media or an external hard drive, chances are you don’t do it that often.
And even worse, if you keep the backup in the same location as your computer there is always the possibility that you could lose both at the same time. (This is how director Francis Ford Coppola lost 15 years worth of work when his computer and hard drive backup were stolen together.)
15 Minutes to Peace of Mind
Setting up Mozy is a piece of cake whether you are on Windows or Mac.
In less than 15 minutes you can setup an account, download the software, and get it running on your computer.
After that, it runs in the background and you don’t have to touch it again.
So, your task for this weekend is to put a backup plan in place for your important files.
Set It and Forget It
I have used Mozy for 2 years now. I love it.
Hopefully, you never have to use the backups. However, having it in place… is great peace of mind.
Set it and forget it… but know that your files are protected against theft or loss.
OMG Craig- it’s like you were on a psychic wavelength with the Smith household. My husband’s Mac just died- looks like it may be beyond saving without completely wiping it. Our photos in Mexico from our family vacation in March- gone. Ugh- we are very lucky it wasn’t more than that. I will definitely check out Mozy. Thanks!
@ChristySmith Christy, sorry to hear! Wow, that is not cool. Hope you didn’t lose too much!
There’s only one thing to watch out for when using backup plans like Mozy. Make sure not to accidentally delete files just when Mozy syncs! I know multiple people who have lost very important files this way (entire photo directories and the majority of a novel in progress). The novel is currently being rewritten, but the photos are gone for good.
@Sushi Thanks for the feedback. Not sure how this would happen.
I have not had this issue in my time w Mozy.
Thanks for sharing!
