Bad headphones for the first 20 hours, great headphones after 20+ hours of burn in.
4 out of 5 stars
Bad headphones for the first 20 hours, great headphones after 20+ hours of burn in.
Saw the product for sale as a gold box deal here on Amazon. I couldn't resist the deal, I've heard good things about these headphones and I decided to get them, I was curious to hear what 200 dollar headphones sounded like. I didn't need to buy a new set of cans, as a DJ/Producer for many years I've got quite a few cans at home. Not including the infinite ear buds I've gone through the years. 1. Senheisser HD205 2. AKG - 240K 3. Consumer headphones from a clothing store. 4. Pioneer HDJ-500 All of them have a distinct type of sound signature and different sound quality. They have been burned in to get the best quality out of them. First off, the box for the Crossfade LP's is great. It makes you feel like this product is really special with the red ribbon you need to cut off before you can open it. Once open, you won't have to dig far to get to the exoskeleton caring case that houses the headphones. But do look a bit deeper and you'll find a microfiber cloth, the manual, and some pamphlets which you should take some time to read. Once you're done with the extracurricular part of the package, take some time to admire the exoskeleton case. Hard black leather casing outside makes sure your purchase stays secure and safe, while the soft red velvet material inside is making sure the crossfade LP are cozy. Also inside you'll see the housing for two Kevlar covered cables (both of them straight, no coiled cord included), a 1/4th jack, and a Carabiner clip you can attach to the outside of the case. Note that you can fit a thumb drive or two within the straps that house the accessories. Great craftsmanship by V-Moda on the case, its one of my favorite parts of the package. Take one of the cables out plug the straight end into your headphones and the angled end into a music source. As many other reviews have stated, you'll come to hear that straight out of the box sound, a sound which is not indicative of the real quality that lies within the headphones. Out of the box, the Crossfade LP's will sound bad. Bass overwhelming, drowning out the other frequencies. And I agree with most of the reviews that give it low scores based on sound quality. But it can't be the only time they listen to it. These headphones will NEED to be burned in. There are different ways to burn in headphones, my usual burn in process consist of 20 or so tracks that make up the type of music I produce or DJ (progressive trance/house/breaks, techno) in high quality (320k or better) repeating overnight while I sleep at regular volume. It may take up to 20+ hours for them to fully burn in. While this isn't the only way to burn in headphones, it is my method. After the second night of burn in, these sounded pretty vibrant. The reviews saying it's bass heavy are correct, but with burn in you can actually hear more of the crispy highs and mids while the bass is still thumping. Compared to the 240K and the HDJ-500, these have a more unique sound signature, those are more flat response, the crossfade LPs is bass centric. As expected the HD205's signature is much much lighter, and don't carry the same sound quality as the rest of the headphones. The build quality of the Crossfade LP's is second to none, metal construction throughout. Soft headband on top (with the stylish purple design) and the memory foam earpieces make for a very comfortable headset. My only gripe construction wise is they don't fold into itself, but these can take some abuse.I can't say the same for the all plastic HDJ-500s. I feel as though I need to be extremely careful with those. As a consumer headphone - Definitely would go for these, especially at the sale price, but at original price it'd be a tough buy just for sound quality. Looks department and accessories are really good. Out of the three, this is the least I can relate too. As a Music Producer - I would not go for these headphones. Producer's need a flat response to see what frequency needs to be buffed/nerfed. They are too strong bass wise even with burn in for mix purposes. 200+ can get you a good pair of mixing cans. They're OK for referencing, but then just about anything is decent for that. As a DJ - They are good DJ headphones, especially with the sturdiness, the case (honestly I can't see myself breaking these inside the case even if I wanted too) and the accessories. I like the Kevlar covered cables, but I really wish they had a coiled cord and I would've loved if it folded. They cover the negative points I had with the HDJ-500's, although those sound better in the mids and highs. At a 200+ price point, I would go for something that I wouldn't have any issues with. At the sale price, it's a good choice. The V-Moda Crossfade LP's are quality headphones, from build quality to sound quality. At first listen you can say they aren't worth the sale price, heavy bass, mids and highs recessed. I didn't like them the first few times I listened in them, they caused a great deal of fatigue. But it takes some time for the potential of the headphones to come through. I really like these headphones and that I bought it at the sale price. Hope this review helps! -Ben ONE MONTH EDIT: Today is 8-15-13 V-Moda.com has a sale on their website going on right now use the coupon code Vthepeople to get 14.4% off your order! Good until Saturday! On with the update! I've had these headphones for almost three months, this review is almost a month old. Where do we stand now? I've had a few gigs with these guys and they've stood the test of time. Durable has hell, and now with those extra hours of burn in they sound better than ever. The mids are still recessed a bit but the lows and highs are outstanding. Still not suitable for audio mixing for producers but for DJ's and consumers, I can't recommend these enough. One thing I need to note is that, while it may not effect me, the ear pads are not designed for the large ear individual in mind, I've read numerous reviews of people sending them back stating that the ear pads are just too small, combined with the clamping force of the headphone it hurts to much to have these on. Other than that, I ordered some dark purple/violet custom design shields (they look epic now, I'll put up some pictures) from V-moda using the coupon code above to get 14.4% off of your purchase.

I love these headphones! I bought these during a sale last year in December (2013). I was looking for headphones to use for just about everything, from my Samsung S4 to using with chat on the PS4. Now when I was buying headphones, I was buying the cheap, but comfortable to use. I bought Maxell and Sony Street design headphones. The Sonys always get destroyed after about 8 months of use, but that is what you get when you purchase headphones below $25.

When I was in the market for some really good headphones, I wanted really good well rounded headphones, for my many electronics. I bought these when they were on sale for about $70. Normally these go for about $200, but at the time I was not going to spend the $200 for headphones, when these came down in price I jumped on the opportunity. I used this for about everything. I would prefer to have sound that is purest to the sound, instead of having bass added to these headphones, but you cannot have everything. However, not being a sound aficionado I believe the sound that came from these was more the sufficient for I need them for.

What I use these headphones for:

    - I use them for work and listen to youtube playlists. (Hence, if you are using these for this purpose, probably having the purest sound will not do much if you went with more expensive headphones.)

    - I use these with chat on Skype, on my Alienware M15x (WARNING: If your computer does not support both microphone and headset with one headphone jack, the cable that comes with the headphones/microphone will not work, unless you have a Y-connector that allows you to split the audio and microphone into two different streams of connections. My Alienware m15 did not have this, so I had to purchase a Y-connector as the microphone and the sound audio where with different jacks.)

-Samsung S4, (Works perfectly fine with this android phone either chatting on Skype or regular calls. Though the product page says that the cable with the volume -/+ will not work on androids, only on iPhone/iPad. Which did not bother me.)

-PS4 (Make sure you put the connection on the PS4 through the PS4 controller. I use this for PS4 chat on Final Fantasy 14 with keyboard/mouse/controller setup and it works flawlessly.)

(ANOTHER NOTE: When I use these for chat I also use the V-Moda Boom Mic for Chatting either on Skype or PS4. You can purchase this from here for about $30. And it work better than the microphone that comes with these headphones.)

    PRO:
-Fantastic Sound what they were worth.
    -Very good construction and durability.
-Allow you to disconnect the cable from the headphones.
    -Carrying case.
-Two cables (3ft other [comes with Volume -/+], I believe, 6ft [ does not come with Volume -/+]
-Not much outside sound comes through when you have the headphones at a certain volume.
-Noise bleed is fantastic as little to no sound can be heard from the headphone cups.

    Cons:
-It felt a bit uncomfortable for long periods of time, however, when I was gaming or listening to music, adjust the headphones on your head a bit forward and this released the pain. I felt that the headphones would slip down my head. I put the headphones on the smallest setting, as being women my head is not that big. My guy friend tries these on his head, and he said that they were very comfortable. Though, he only had them on for about 15 secs.

-The Cables! The cables that tend to come with the headphones, seems to fray after a certain amount of use. Not in fray, that the cable just comes apart, but the fibers protecting the cable frays, which tends to be a bit unsightly for my taste, but I'm cheap, so they work. The product page that these are kevlar, but I see they are very much strong on these cables that come with the headphones, however the fiber surrounding the cable are not. Even the Boom Mic is not protected from the fraying,

-COLOR! I thought that these were pure white. Though it said on the webpage pearl white, I looked at the picture and bought these because it looked cool. However, when I received these in the mail it was not the color as pictured. It is not white like the SAMSUNG S4 or white iPhone. SO BEWARE OF THIS COLOR DISCREPANCY! More like the color of necklace pearls.

-Price: It always seems that these type of headphones which tends to have a lot of bass to there line, and not have a much purer sound. I listen to mostly classical and movie theme music with orchestra bands. I do listen to rock, pop, and other modern music which is perfect for these headphones, but not for classical or much softer tone music such as piano or violin. BUT! I did not let that deter me from purchasing these over the Ars-Technica headphones. Those headphones seem they have purer sound, but they did not look as cool as these headphones.

CONCLUSION: These are perfect for everyday use and chatting (if you have the V-MODA Boom Mic). Listening to music such as rock, pop, nightcore, and others will be perfect for this type of music. Classical not so much, but if you are not a particular on the sound, then these are the perfect headphones for you.

The look and feel scream high quality. If you treat your electronics with respect you will want to baby these headphones. They don't seem to need it, but you will anyway. You can feel the metal construction, the baby-soft skin of the ear cups that covers the memory foam, and high-grade (hard plastic?) cup material. If you didn't know the supplied cords (2, one with a 3-button remote) was made from Kevlar you would think it was a cloth-wound retro style. At 60, I can remember seeing old electrical cords that felt like this. Even the damn plugs are above average in look and feel.

I bought these because my old pair of Phillips noise-canceling headphone had plastic "Y" construction to hold the ear cups and after 4-5 years they broke. I used epoxy to fix them, but they broke again in a way that I couldn't fix. Also they started shedding small parts. They were nice, but not made to last. After looking at most of the over-ear headphones on Amazon, I decided to get these not so much because they look cool as hell, but because of the construction. They also got good ratings for sound and I can attest that these puppies have more bass then I will ever use.

I was concerned that they may not be as comfortable as I would like. I do feel like my ears are almost too large for them, but they are just big enough and in the few hours I have worn them so far they seem very comfortable.

The price went up while I was looking at headphones. The others I was considering were only $40-$60 and I'm pretty sure I would have been happy with those based on the specs and reviews. But wile I don't think I would have paid the retail price of $199 or even $150 I was ok with spending $119 and I feel I got a good deal. I may never need another pair of headphones now, but I want to follow this company in case they offer other products I need/want.

Suggestions for the company: The semi-hard clam shell case you provide really put me off at first. I thought it should have been hard shell to be useful. Now I like it more, but I suggest you consider making one that is NOT like a bodysuit. If you were to make a case that was not so form-fitting you could give us something we might be able to store our mp3 players in, ram cards, extra cords, or even a pair of ear buds!

Lastly, the only possible "con" I can find with these headphones is that the contact points on the metal "Y" that hold the ear cups is plastic. That may be ok, but it seems like a potential point of failure at some point. I would have liked to see that be metal or perhaps brass. A tough nylon-type plastic would have been my second choice. Perhaps it is fine and I will trust that it is. Thank you!

Update 05/19/13 I still love these headphones. I took them on a flight and was so happy they blocked out most of the noise. I could enjoy the music from my mp3 player unlike with my ear buds.

One thing to note: I have been finding that they bother my ears if I wear them more than 30 minutes! I have tried adjusting them and positioning the headband in different ways, but I no longer consider them perfect because of this. If I thought I could return them I might do this, but I may just get a different pair next year to find some that I can wear for several hours at a time.

The use of pretty models and artistic shots in both the official online pictures and on the box shows that this company puts brand image pretty high on its priority list. The box presentation, carrying case, and physical look of the Crossfade LP carry significant swag. Being able to customize these headphones is also sweet, and something I don't think any other manufacturer promotes as well. If you want to wear good looking and unique headphones on the street, these and the M-100's are probably the best out there.

That said, I picked the Nero's and I'm a little turned off by the chrome screws, chrome rim by the pads, and reptile texture. My taste is more like the LP2 Special Matte Blacks which look slick, but those were not on sale. I'll probably end up contacting V-Moda, maybe buy some different colored screws if I can't paint the ones on these. The overall build quality is impressive, they feel lite but strong, and quality just feels great. They are fairly comfortable but crowd the ears and sit tight to pinch eye/sun glasses but there is no sense of slipping off my head.

I was able to compare these headphones to a few others, but I think the Sennheiser HD 380 Pro ($150) represent the most similar to the LP incost/features. The 380 take on a warm tone with a well developed dynamic sound range, but the Crossfade LP goes for bass and lots of it. This makes them great for pop, hip hop, and electronic music, but also delivers a different audio flavor to jazz and even some rock which I appreciate compared to my regular headphones.

The unbalanced approach to the sound, however, can be jarring at times. When listening to more demanding musically tracks, the exuberant bass tends to muddle some instruments and vocals, especially female vocals. I find myself tinkering with the equalizer, trying to find balance, but the highs just can't seem to get there. That said, having a strong bass presence is fun and it does work well with lots of music.

If I bought these without knowing what to expect, I would have rated them lower. But I read other reviews and was able to try out some a pair of M-100's, so I knew what sound these would deliver and feel on my head. Throw in an awesome Amazon sale and I'm quite pleased with the purchase, giving me a portable/backup pair of headphones with good noise isolation while providing a fun listening session for about half the music I listen to.

I would recommend these to someone who listens to bass driven music and wants a visually attractive headphone for mobile use. If you are looking for a headphone to listen to while chilling at home, and want a headphone that also works with acoustic, rock, or vocal heavy music, then I would recommend the more comfortable and dynamic Sennheiser HD 380 Pro.
