Resist the urge to implement complex time management systems or tools. You don’t need expensive software or gadgets to jumpstart your efforts.

Instead, simple habits and efforts can make a huge difference in your activities.

Here are 10 Top Time Management Tips for Beginners:

  1. Have the Right Tools – You need the right tools for the job. This applies to time management the same as most activities in life. Take the time to assemble your time management toolkit.
  2. Keep It Simple – Keep your time management setup to the simplest possible. Power of one. Simplest tools available.
  3. Don’t Spend a Lot of Money on Technology – You don’t need expensive software or gadgets. Yes, there are great apps out there to help you, but often the built-in apps on your phone are good if you are just starting out. Even a pad of paper can be more effective than complex tools.
  4. Clean Workspace – Less clutter results in more room for productivity. Clean up the piles of stuff on your desk to give yourself more space to do actual work.
  5. Make a List – It is staggering how many individuals go through their day without a list of the things they need to do. Making a list lets you get an overview of all the tasks on your plate. As well, it frees up your brain to concentrate on the work at hand.
  6. Plan Your Day – A little advance planning saves a lot of time later in your day. Even 5 minutes of reviewing your calendar and to-do list will avoid much self-inflicted stress and life friction.
  7. Start Early – The early bird does get the worm. If you are just starting out with your time management, get started early… before the rest of the world does. The early morning hours can be some of the most productive, and allows you to get your most important work done before others are even awake.
  8. Make Appointments with Your Work – Even small tasks require time allocated to them. Don’t let your day’s events push your to-dos down the road. Instead, schedule appointments on your calendar for your most important tasks.
  9. Control Your Technology – Technology can be a wonderful tool to allow you to get more work done. However, it can also distract you and steal your time. Remember that your phone and other gadgets are there for your convenience… not other people’s. Turn off the notifications, and by all means, do not answer your phone if you are busy.
  10. Practice Saying No – You can’t do it all. No one can. Be decisive and make the hard choices in how you will spend your time.

Getting Started with Your Time Management

Time management doesn’t have to be complex or difficult.

If you are just starting out with time management, keep your efforts simple and straightforward.

If you practice a few of these tips each day, you will find that you have more time and less stress in your life.

  1. Thank you so much for writing such a great post. Time is very valuable resource. Proper use of time leads to success.

  2. Thank you for sharing these time management tips, Craig. I like the idea of controlling technology the most, as for me that’s what distracts me most. Making appointments with my work also works great, as it helps me to organize myself and get the job done without distractions. Otherwise, I start experiencing stress because ща not meeting my working deadlines, which is not fun at all.
