5 Reasons To Put Things Off Until Tomorrow

You are getting ready to start your day, and you are nervous to think about what you need to get done today.

Your todo list is a mile long before you even get to work.

And that’s part of the problem, your list is so exhaustive that you are overwhelmed before you even begin.

Targeted Procrastination

Let’s start by stating that I’m not advocating procrastination. Action is the basis of all effective time management efforts.

However, I am talking about being realistic about what you can do in one day.

Practice “targeted procrastination” in order to minimize the number of tasks you are trying to complete.

“You can’t do everything, be deliberate in what you put off.”

Take a look at your todo list and be brutally honest about what you shouldn’t be doing today. This means putting off lesser tasks. Even delaying ones that can wait.

Here are 5 Reasons that You Should Put Things Off Until Tomorrow:

  1. Lighten Your Load – You can’t work effectively if your mind and list are so burdensome that you can’t even think. Reduce your load for today and put off those todos that don’t need to be done.
  2. Get to What’s Important – Don’t let lesser tasks cloud your todo list. Make sure your most important items are front-and-center. Keep your today list to the top 3-5 todos you need to do.
  3. Eliminate Distractions – Your mind can focus on only so many tasks. Do only one task at a time, but also minimize the number of tasks needed for each day.
  4. Some Tasks Don’t Need to Be Done – When you practice “targeted procrastination,” you will find that many of those smaller tasks never come back, or they simply resolve themselves. Just because a task made it to your todo list doesn’t mean that it needs to be done.
  5. Be Realistic About Your Time – Time management is all about balance. If you are trying to do too much, you are either not going to finish or you are eventually going to burnout from too much effort. Be realistic about the available time you have in your day.

Do Only What’s Necessary

Take a look at your todo list. What doesn’t need to be done today? (Or at all?)

You’ll find that many of the things you thought you needed to do are just noise. Focus the time you have on what’s most important.

It may seem counterproductive, but procrastinating might just be what you need to do in order get more done.

  1. Thanks a lot for such an interesting article 🙂 It is essential to control over the amount of time by creating right time management.
I always write my to do list of the day, create tasks by priorities. By the way , recently I have found a free time tracking software: https://www.webwork-tracker.com/ , I use it and liked it very much, the only disappointment that it still doesn’t have any integrations, but the rest is perfect.
