No one knows how to do a skill without learning it first.

So-called naturals, are the ones who put in the most time honing their craft.

Practice is the magic that gives you the ability to improve. The time you invest will pay off in increased performance in the future.

If you want to do something better, you need to practice.

The Path to Productivity

If you want to improve your ability at a task, practice is the path to increased productivity and performance.

Practicing means repeating your actions to improve your skill and knowledge level. It saves time in the future, because you know how to perform an action or have acquired the ability to do it more efficiently.

It doesn’t matter if it is a sport or a task at your job. Practice builds your ability to perform that action quicker, faster, and more accurately.

The time you invest now, will pay off later.

Here are 5 Ways that Practice Makes You More Productive:

  1. Practice Learns New Skills – Practice is how you learn new skills. Yes, you can read a book, take a class, or watch a video, but it is the actual doing that teaches you how to perform the new skill. It is the practice that builds your competence.
  2. Practice Improves Performance – Practice isn’t just for athletes, it’s for anyone who wants to hone a particular skill. Even the best have to practice, and they do it regularly. This applies from sports, to work, and even life skills. Repetition leads to improved proficiency and skill levels.
  3. Practice Creates Better Ways to Do Things – Repetition not only improves performance, but creates even better methods to do things. Even though practice is about doing something “the right way,” it is often through repetition that you discover new ways to perform it.
  4. Practice Builds Confidence – When you believe you can do something, your confidence increases. This results in improved productivity because you know you can perform a task that previously had been an obstacle.
  5. Practice Prevents Rework – Many say that they don’t have time to practice, yet practice pays for itself through increased speed of productivity and less rework. When you practice, you are less likely to have to re-do work due to mistakes or sub-standard results.

Practice Makes Productive

The top-performers or experts in any field are the one who are willing to invest the time to practice.

There are no shortcuts to better performance or new skills. You must put in the time.

Make sure you practice today.

  1. Craig, I feel the need of real sharp pictures for all of your blogs. Is there a dull faded pattern that you follow? 🙂 It is just my thought!!!

  4. Great reminder. I especially liked the note about learning new skills. Whether it’s something for the job or a new task management system, at first it will seem slower than the “old” way, but investing a little time to learn that new skill will reap benefits (including greater productivity) over time.

    Thanks for this!

  5. Craig,

I totally agree here. Practice is one of the major factors in performers. Last year I read The Sports Gene and in there it talked about how athletes had to practice 10,000 hours to master a new skill. Thats a lot of hours but they are also the best in the world at what they do.
