10 Tasks That Should Be On Your Todo List Today

Todo List board

What’s on your todo list says a lot about you.

It determines what you will get done and what you will remember to do.

Some people keep lists of any and all task that come their way. Others only write down the few tasks they know they can do today.

What do you add to your list?

Don’t Be Afraid to Add to Your List

What do you put on your todo list?

Some write down only the things they know will get done. Others write down what they completed and then immediately check the items off. (Kind of a reverse todo list.)

You shouldn’t be afraid to add things to your list. Adding a task to your list shouldn’t be looked at as a burden or hard commitment.

Rather, it is a way to track your tasks. Let your list remember your tasks, so that you don’t have to keep them all in your head.

“Let your todo list remember, so that you can forget for now.” (Tweet this Quote)

Your todo list should never be empty. You should capture all tasks big and small.

You can delete things later. But, always capture those tasks now.

Here are 10 Things That Should Be On Your Todo List Today:

  1. The Task You Will Forget – Your todo list should have your back so that you don’t have to remember all your tasks. Get them out of your head and on your list. You can concentrate on the task at hand and come back to the other items later.
  2. The Things You Absolutely Must Do Today – Put your non-negotiable tasks at the top of your list. Or highlight or star them. Whatever you need to do to make it immediately visible what tasks you must get done today.
  3. The New Habit – Forming habits is hard. Add the positive habits you are trying to develop by putting them right on your todo list. Checking them off will help you build lasting behaviors.
  4. The Step Towards Your Goal – Big goals don’t happen overnight. Rather, they happen step-by-step and day-by-day. Make sure you have a daily step towards your big goal on your todo list. Every day.
  5. The Menial Task – Don’t be afraid to write even the simplest tasks on your list. It will help you remember them (See #1), and it feels great when you check them off.
  6. The Promise You Made to Someone – How many promises do you break simply because you forget them? When you promise to do something for someone else, immediately write it down on your list. Your todo list can double as your promise list.
  7. The Task You Delegated – Just because you delegated a task to someone else does not mean that you can forget about it. Keep the delegated task on your list until you have confirmation that it is completed.
  8. The Task You Need to Do For Yourself – We tend to put things on our list that we need to do or owe to others. It is just as important to put tasks down that you owe yourself. What do you need to do to take care of you? Add it to your list.
  9. The Task with a Deadline – Tasks with a specific deadline should always be on your list. Make sure that you always put the due date right on your list, so that you won’t be asking yourself later, “When is that due?”
  10. The Answer You Are Waiting For – When you are waiting on an answer or response, add a follow-up task to your list. Tip: Don’t use the silly email yourself trick. It only clogs your inbox. Instead, add it to your todo list where it belongs.

Add It to Your List

Don’t be afraid to add to your todo list.

Big or small, put it on your list.

You can forget that task for now, but it will be there ready and waiting when you need it.

  1. I learned that writing down the things I’ll forget is a whole lot easier then pressuring myself to try and remember (or thinking that I will).

I never really thought about listing new habits. I guess I have for certain things (without noticing), but not everything. I’m definitely going to be more mindful of this and try it. Thanks!

      1. Thanks… was thinking about writing more about “habit lists.”

Actually, there is a great app out there called “Habit List” that is a daily checklist for new habits. 🙂

  2. Agreed. I write all those things on my list and am never afraid to add more if I need to. It’s the only way I’ll remember.

  3. Are you guys using just plain paper, index cards, software on your computers or portable devices? I love the list and to do, I am lost at having too many programs or too many lists and nothing in one central place.

      1. I am having new hopes for Reminders and some of the stock apps from iOS 7. Been playing with it for a couple of days. Will see fully tomorrow when its out and everything seems to be better… Hoping for that!

  4. These are great suggestions! I use the Priorities app on my phone and have three lists. My first list is where I collect EVERYTHING. I go through that and move tasks to my THIS WEEK list, and then choose tasks to do DAILY from there. I have found it to be incredibly productive and it feels awesome to cross things off the list. 🙂
