We All Have Time

We all have time.

Some have more than others.

The catch is that you don’t know how much.

You may have a week, a month, or even many years to come.

But, it doesn’t matter how much time you have.

It’s how you choose to use it.

I Don’t Have Time

People tell themselves all kinds of lies.

My favorite is, “I don’t have time.”

The truth is…

You have time.

The real question is… How are you spending it?

When you don’t have time, what you are really saying is something else is more important.

Or maybe not, but you are spending your time that way anyway.

This is the truth whether you are talking to your kids, spouse, or co-workers.

Use Your Time Or Lose It

Once you spend time, it is gone.

You can’t get it back.

You can’t go back.

You can’t save up time.

You can’t keep time.

You can’t make more.

You have to use your time.

It is a use it or lose it situation.

What Matters Most?

When you spend your time, think twice.

Remember that you don’t get to keep it.

You get to spend it.

Spend yours wisely.

Do you spend your time where it matters most?

  1. Hi Craig,

Really loved your article. I feel like 8 hours/per day is not nearly enough to do everything I focus on, professionally speaking, not mentioning personal life, cause that’s a huge mess of wasted opportunities. But what else is there to do? You go to work, come back home and the first thing that comes to mind is “hot shower & sleep”. Rarely do I find time for other activities, and I know that somewhere down the line I’ll regret it…

Another article that really inspired me: http://www.thinkbasis.com/blog/2011/design/two-secrets-to-liberate-your-time-and-life.html, definitely worth the read if you have the time, Craig. There must be a way for me to make the most out of my time and not sacrifice my career along the way.

    1. I’m glad you liked the post Paul and I agree both this post and the one Craig posted below are very valuable. All the best with reclaiming your time. It’s the one thing we can’t buy more of when it’s all over πŸ™‚

  5. One of my favorite sayings is, “You have exactly enough time for the important things.” In other words, it’s not about making time, it’s about prioritizing the time you have.

  7. Craig,

To answer your question “Do you spend your time where it matters most?”, I’m happy to say yes!

Of course, there is more optimization and tweaking that could be done, but my time is divided between family time, building my online business, hobbies and personal growth.

Obviously I still have my day job and I’m not able to devote time (yet) as much as I want to these four elements, but I’m still happy to my current situation πŸ™‚

    Cheers,

    Timo

  11. Great post Craig! Everyone must decide how to best spend their time but as parents we must be extra vigilant, we can never recover the missed moments with our children. Reminders like this post are wonderful to have and receive often. This is one that I’ll be printing out to keep around. Thanks!

    1. @Jennifer Bowen Thx, Jennifer! You are right… those moments can’t be recaptured.

Sometimes you have to ask which is more important, getting that task done or being their for your kids. πŸ™‚ I choose the latter.

  14. Hey Craig,

I don’t think most people tell themselves a lie about having time – they really don’t, precisely because they spent it somewhere else, like you said.

So really, what matters is not TIME management, but prioritization.

Not related, and I don’t remember where I got it from, but I like “You don’t HAVE to do anything, you choose to.”.

    Matt
