What is Your Turbo Button?

When you need to get yourself going, how do you step on the gas?

There are things that boost productivity and accelerate each of us.

What gets you going?

We all have an internal Turbo button.

Sometimes, you just need to push it.

Going Turbo

I am an early riser. However, some days it takes more than a little motivation to start my day.

When I need to get moving, I usually look to one of my “triggers” to rev me up.

I do most of my writing first thing in the morning, and I usually combine a little caffeine and some of my favorite music to get me started. I review my calendar and daily plan of attack.

Soon, I am zooming through tasks and the creativity is flowing.

It is like I pushed the “Turbo Boost” button on KITT’s dashboard. (Shameless Knight Rider reference…)

And I am flying into my day.

What Gets You Going?

We all have different things that get us going.

Here are just some of the things that may be your Turbo button:

  • Caffeine – Many people rely on their coffee or soda to get them going in the morning. While I cannot deny the effects of a good caffeine jolt, I wonder how much of it actually has to do with the next item on our list.
  • Starting Rituals – We all have little rituals and practices that we do. Whether it is our morning routine or the way we start something. These little habits can serve to get us going quickly and accelerate our productivity.
  • Exercise – Doing something physical can literally get your blood pumping. I prefer to do my exercise early in the morning for two reasons. I get it done and out of the way, and it pumps me up for the entire day.
  • A Plan – Some people are motivated by knowing what they need to do. If you like structure, making your plan for the day can be the motivation you need to get going.
  • Location – I previously wrote about determining where you are most productive. Don’t underestimate the power of location to affect your productivity.
  • Music – Whether it is cleaning, exercising, or writing, music can be the gasoline on your fire. I find that motivational music can get you “in the zone”  and dramatically increase performance in many tasks. What do you listen to?
  • Fear of Deadlines – Some people are only motivated by pressure and deadlines. They let fear be their motivator. I don’t recommend this method, but many choose to live by it.
  • Passion – A path I do recommend is to be motivated by your passion. Hopefully, you are passionate about what you on a daily basis. Your work can be motivation enough to jump start your day.

Push the Button

Usually when you talk about having your buttons pushed, it is a negative thing.

However, pressing your Turbo button can be just what you need to blast off into your day.

When you know what ignites your motivation and productivity, you can use that to your advantage.

Need to get your day going?

Push your Turbo button.

What helps you blast off into your day? What is your Turbo button?

  1. For me, the hard part is STARTING. Sometimes I open up my Word document, then instead of starting on my tasks I go ahead and surf the web or check Facebook, etc, which really drags my productivity time. I think the best way for me is to have a glass of cold water in front of me and a sweet in my mouth so I can kickstart my work.

  3. Getting to work early is the key. But you don’t always feel like getting up. Here is what I tell myself: If you can make it to the bathroom, then you can make it to the shower. If you can get a good hot shower, you will be able to get dressed and walk the dogs. While you walk the dogs, ask yourself the one thing that must be done today. When you get back, do it.
